Spring will be turning into summer faster than we realize,
but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the little bit of it that’s left. When
spending so much time indoors lately, this means ensuring the air you breath
keeps you healthy and comfortable.
The Maynard Man has some tips to share with you below to
ensure this is the case.
Poor indoor air quality, no matter the time of year or
current circumstances, is a significant health concern. In addition to the risk
of virus transmission, pollutants like pollen, dust, and smoke can get trapped
in your home. This causes allergies and asthma symptoms to flare up, and can
even make a healthy person ill.
Long-term exposure to poor indoor air quality can even
produce chronic symptoms like fatigue, headaches, brain fog, and respiratory
irritation. If you’re not already thinking about how you can improve your
indoor air quality, now is the time to consider this!
Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned
Clean ductwork helps your HVAC systems to run more
efficiently, first of all. But also, dirty air ducts can allow contaminated air
to circulate back through your home.
Change Your Air Filter
The air filter that comes standard with your HVAC system is
in place to protect the system from dust, dirt, and other debris that can get
in the system and do it harm. While its main purpose is not to protect your
indoor air quality, a clogged air filter can certainly impede your air quality.
The air filter should be replaced every 1-3 months to ensure both HVAC
efficiency and more breathable air.
Do Some Spring Cleaning
You’d be surprised to find just how many contaminants your
carpet and soft furniture can capture and retain. Vacuuming once a week is
advisable, as is shampooing or steam cleaning your carpet every now and then as
well.
Invest in the Right Indoor Air Quality Products
There are a number of indoor air quality products on the
market that will help you breathe easier. The Maynard Man offers comprehensive
products and services, and can help guide you on which would be the best for
your specific home. Options include:
- Air
Filtration and Air Purification Systems: There are many different types of
these on the market, from whole-house air filtration and purification systems
that help pull contaminants out of the air, to UV air purifiers that attack
problems like mold and bacteria growth while it’s still in your ductwork. - Dehumidifiers
(and Humidifiers): A whole-house dehumidifier will do you well for the
remainder of spring and throughout summer. The ideal relative humidity level in
your home is between 30-50%. Summertime humidity levels certainly can surpass
this range. Next winter, consider a humidifier, as well! - ERV or
HRV Systems: ERV and HRV stands for Energy Recovery Ventilator and Heat
Recovery Ventilator, respectively. These systems help bring in fresh air when
your HVAC systems are running so that you don’t lose HVAC efficiency trying to
rid your home of stale air.
